Emergency Care

Patients may sometimes experience mouth injuries during their treatment. Dental emergencies which occur while the patient is wearing orthodontic appliances, such as braces, generally pertain to one of two categories.

Emergencies pertaining to Orthodontic Appliances

Appliances may occasionally break or bend during your orthodontic care. Should disturbances such asloose brackets, loose bands, broken or poking wires occur, kindly contact our office to book an appointment during patient hours. Treating emergencies on a walk in basis is not permitted, as it may cause inconvenience for you and scheduled patients. While you wait for your appointment, below are

some helpful hints to help you overcome some of the problems that you may encounter.

• If your mouth is being irritated by a tie wire, you should cover it with bees wax or use a blunt object, such as a pencil eraser or Q-tip, to tuck it under the arch wire.

• If there is a loose band or bracket, it can be left in place until seen by our staff on the day of your appointment. In case you experience a loose band or bracket, kindly contact us at ......... during patient

hours and we will schedule an appointment to reattach the loose appliance, if indicated.

• If you experience a broken or poking arch wire, you can use a pencil eraser to bend it in or cut it with nail clippers. If you believe the problem persists, kindly contact our office during patient hours.

• The video below will explain how you should handle an orthodontic emergency.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth

If you have a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, regardless of whether you are receiving orthodontic care, you should immediately ice the injured area and contact your dentist as soon as possible. In order to ascertain the extent of the injury, an x-ray of the tooth/teeth involved is usually necessary. It would be best if you contact your dentist first if the tooth is either displaced, knocked out, or fractured, as we may not have the necessary materials or anaesthesia to treat such injuries. If the appliances that you are using have been dislodged or displaced, we will have to either adjust or replace them as soon as possible, following your visit to your general dentist, depending on your level of comfort.
